Sequence
Medallist Competition
Robert Aldred reports from the Sequence
Faculty’s Annual Medallist Festival
A
cloudy morning greeted us on the Sunday of 24th June 2007
which was probably a great relief for the dancers, following
the heat of the previous day.
The event took place at the Hermitage Leisure Centre, Whitwick,
in Leicestershire. Although a new venue for the Sequence Medallist
Festival, it has proved a popular site for the Society's inventive
dance competitions and indeed since our first visit some years
ago many other promoters now use the facility for their competitions
due to its central location, size, excellent facilities and
helpful staff.
Jill Bush (Sequence Faculty Chair) greeted everyone and a
very full programme of competitors began promptly at noon.
Our experienced and knowledgeable panel of adjudicators for
the day comprised Louise Aldred (Nottingham), Diana Wykes
(London) and Raymond Miles (Reading).
Sadly, a couple of schools who regularly support the event
were unable to do so on this occasion. Nevertheless a good
crowd of enthusiastic dancers were in attendance and we were
treated to a high quality display of dancing with some notable
individual performances. It was also nice to see a range of
different rhythms represented on the programme showing how
versatile Sequence can be. I am sure that the dancers will
have enjoyed learning those dances which are less frequently
used such as the Latchford Schottische and Princess Mazurka,
together with some of the new Championship dances such as
Kensington Two Step and Countess Waltz.
Dancers, teachers and parents must all be congratulated on
the overall standard and general presentation and for helping
to make the day such an enjoyable one. The hardworking team
of organisers and helpers must also be thanked for their dedication
and assistance in the smooth running of the event and I'm
sure we all look forward to next years event with much anticipation.
