Ms
Sonia Sabri
Sonia
Sabri is one of the most exciting artists to emerge
from the new generation of UK based South Asian dance
artists. Sonia Sabri trained in Kathak for over 11 years
and subsequently has performed as a solo artist in America,
Canada, Europe and Asia. She is now regarded as one
of the leading talents on the international dance scene.
Sonia has also established a reputation for collaboration
across dance styles and art forms, including through
projects with Bivouac Dance Company, Kathak Collective,
Utsaha and Brumhalata Intercultural Storytelling Company.
Sonia has also performed Kathak to a range of compositions
by great composers such as J.S. Bach, Thelonious Monk,
Stevie Wonder and others based on Fusion music.
Sonia
set up her company, Sonia Sabri Company, in 2002 to
present the classical style of Kathak in a new light,
without diluting its essential purity and integrity
and open up fresh new ways of presenting Kathak dance,
questioning and reinventing the form and exploring the
use of innovative theatre designs. Sonia’s commitment
to developing a distinctive style informed by contemporary
experience and creative resources, results in work that
is especially appealing and relevant to today’s
audiences.
In
addition to performing and choreographing her own productions,
Sonia is a teacher of Kathak dance and holds regular
classes at the Midlands Arts Centre in Birmingham as
well as leading various workshops, lecture demonstrations
and residencies in national and international venues.
Sonia is also the co-artistic director of her youth
dance company, Akar.
