There are six grades of examination in Bharatanatyam and six in Kathak.
Grade 1 is intended for those with only one or two years of experience
of dancing and thereafter, up to Grade 6, they progressively expect
more experience, technique and repertoire. There are no minimum or
maximum age limits; teachers are expected to judge the appropriate
level of maturity and dance accomplishment of their students.
Vocational
examinations for those who have reached Grade 6 standard, and are
contemplating preparing to become professional dancers, are in the
planning stage. It is anticipated that a pilot scheme for the introduction
of these is to start in the latter part of 2003. The progression
of these examinations will be Intermediate Foundation, Intermediate,
Advanced 1 and Advanced 2. They will be available in both Bharatanatyam
and Kathak.
Teaching
qualifications are also being planned for those who
wish to be a formally recognized ISTD teacher. These
are the Foundation in Dance Instruction and the Certificate
in Dance Education. Find

A
Primary examination syllabus is also now approved and available for
young beginner-dancers who are not yet accomplished enough to enter
for Grade 1. This is designed specifically to appeal to six to eight
years olds. To quote the syllabus, 'The examination is a demonstration
of the pupil's ability, achievement and joy in dancing. It is observed
and assessed by a visiting examiner, but takes place in the presence
of the teacher. Normally three candidates are examined simultaneously.'
