Tap Teachers

Below is a recap of information published over recent months together with any new amendments and the dates when changes apply.

Applicable now
• The optional use of CDs in Tap examinations.

All grades and vocationally graded examinations (Majors) can be examined using the official CDs (available from the Sales Department).

When necessary, the examiner will provide suitable music for free work.

• Associate, Licentiate and Fellowship exams continue to require a pianist, as do the old Tap medals, Junior and Senior Bronze, Silver, Gold and Gold Star.

• Associate candidates can choose the terminology for the examination ie: using old grade or new grade
names.

• Knowledge of the vocabulary of steps from the Grade 6 syllabus will not at present be expected in the vocational examinations.

Applicable 1st September 2004
• The following exams will be discontinued: Tap medals, Junior and Senior Bronze, Silver, Gold and Gold Star. The tap Associate and Associate Diploma examinations.

• Knowledge of the new Grade 6 syllabus work will be expected in the Licentiate and Fellowship examinations. Candidates may bring CDs to use in conjunction with
the pianist.

Rhythm section alterations

Intermediate Rhythm section:
• Free Rhythm: candidates will arrange a free rhythm given by the examiner up to and including 12th notes.

Advanced 1 Rhythm section:
• A free rhythm will be given by the examiner to be improvised. A two bar phrase in 4/4 time of note values up to and including 16ths which could also include syncopation.

• Rhythmic response - as before Advanced 2 Rhythm section:

• This will include improvisation. The examiner will provide a piece of music not more than 1 minute in duration. The candidate will be able to listen twice to the piece and will then be expected to improvise.

General

Examination Wear
• Please see previous issues of DANCE for photographs and examples of suitable clothing.

• There is no official uniform or colour requirement.

• Candidates may wear Jazz trousers provided they do not impede or obscure footwork.

• Male candidates may wear trousers and shirt.

• Tap shoes should be of a sensible heel height for the age group, heel taps are not obligatory for young children.

• Jingle taps should not be worn.
