Development of a novel tool for assessing aesthetic components of modern dance

Aim:

The main aim of this on-going study is to develop a tool which can be used to assess aesthetic components of modern-contemporary dance performance, such as body control, technique, rhythmical accuracy and performance qualities. Qualities such as these will be assessed by skilled professionals and marked used a Likert scale.

Methods:

Participants – 25 Volunteers per gender (total 50)
Protocol: Participants will perform a specially choreographed contemporary sequence lasting 2 to 5 minutes. During this performance aesthetic qualities will be marked by 3-5 skilled professionals (i.e. dance teachers/experts/ artistic directors) using a Likert scale. This performance will be repeated a week later and marked in the same way. Both performances will be video recorded, and watched and marked at a later date. All sets of marks will be assessed to determine the repeatability of the tool.

Dissemination:

A manuscript will be submitted for publication to dance journals and for presentation at dance conferences.

We are seeking  15 modern dancers with varying levels of experience and a minimum of 3 to 5 dance experts/ teachers. The performance will last 3 minutes and will be video recorded. Markers will be asked to mark at a later date.  For more information on this research or to participate, please ring Manuela Angioi on 07789127883 or email to m.angioi@wlv.ac.uk
