Qualifications Overview As
of 31st August 2004 the ISTD changed its teaching qualifications
from the Associate and Associate Diploma to the Foundation
in Dance Instruction (FDI) and Certificate in Dance Education
(CDE).
These qualifications have been introduced to enhance our professional
teaching qualifications and offer teachers a qualification
not only recognised by the ISTD and dance world, but also
by the UK Government and hopefully, in time, Universities.
Why
have the qualifications changed?
How were the units for the new qualifications
decided?
What is the timescale for the new qualifications?
I am an international teacher – how do
the qualifications affect me?
What is involved in the qualifications?

What is the progression route through the Teaching
Qualifications outside of the UK and Europe ?
Why
have the qualifications changed?
The
main reason for this was to enhance our professional teaching
qualifications in line with the requirements from the Qualifications
and Curriculum Authority (QCA) as, ultimately, it is the UK
Government’s aim to ensure that teachers across all
sectors are appropriately qualified. We also wanted to address
the fact that in the past the dance teaching profession has
not been given the recognition it deserves, allowing too many
unqualified teachers to work with children and adults in this
area.

How
were the units for the new qualifications decided?
In order to design the qualifications the ISTD, in
conjunction with the Minister for Culture, Media and Sport,
other QCA approved dance awarding bodies and the Council of
Dance Education and Training (CDET) started with the remit
of deciding what makes a good dance teacher. From these discussions
the Foundation in Dance Instruction and Certificate in Dance
Education were developed. These
qualifications have been designed to develop the practical
teaching skills required to become a recognised, qualified
and fully rounded dance teacher. Both the FDI and CDE have
been approved by the QCA and are at level 3 and level 4 of
the National Qualifications Framework respectively.

What
is the timescale for the new qualifications?
The new qualifications became available on 1st January
2004 and ran concurrently with the Associate and Associate
Diploma qualifications until 31st August 2004.
As
of 1st September 2004 the Foundation in Dance Instruction
and Certificate in Dance Education are now the professional
teaching qualifications offered by the ISTD throughout the
UK and Europe. Any teachers wishing to enter students for
exams after 30th April 2007 will be required to hold both
qualifications.

I
am an international teacher, how do the qualifications affect
me?
All
candidates in Europe (those countries currently delivering
ISTD examinations) will progress to the Foundation in Dance
Instruction and Certificate in Dance Education within the
same timescale as those in the UK, i.e. any teacher wishing
to enter students for ISTD examination should hold their Certificate
in Dance Education by 1st May 2007.
For
those teachers outside of Europe, their existing teaching
qualifications will continue for the foreseeable future. However,
the ISTD does fully intend to introduce the FDI and CDE to
the rest of the world in due course.

What
is involved in the qualifications?
The
qualifications follow a unitised approach as recommended by
the QCA and are designed to be as flexible as possible. This
means that candidates can gain basic teaching skills from
any dance awarding body and then add the specific genre in
which they wish to concentrate from another awarding body.
Both qualifications are split into three modules as follows:
Module
1 - Teaching Skills : this covers observation, lesson
planning, record taking, methods of instruction, motivational
techniques and self evaluation
Module
2 - Contextual Studies : this covers promotion of
health and safety in dance, lifespan development and learning
Module
3 - Dance Practice : this covers competence in dance
practice within the chosen genre, understanding of the relationship
between music and dance, and background knowledge in the chosen
genre.
This
modular approach to the qualifications also means that once
a candidate has completed their qualification in their first
genre, they can be qualified in any other genre they choose
to study by simply ensuring they meet the entry requirements
in the new genre for each qualification and then completing
the genre specific units, Module 3, at both levels.
Comprehensive
information regarding the qualifications is available from
Approved Dance Centres in the form of a qualification syllabus.
