Setting tasks and sending links

Set your students some simple research tasks, resources to read, or practical tasks to create. You will need to filter and consider age groups and genre but there are lots of useful resources online to keep children/young people and adults engaged with dance. Just ensure that you have checked out the materials that you post and that they are appropriate and safe for your children to view. Refer to our guidance on safeguarding above for further advice.

Students can be pointed towards clips that will inspire them or perhaps enable them to think creatively for choreography. There are many free dance performances that are available to watch via YouTube, Facebook or BBC iPlayer. Send them links via email or using other social media platforms that you have already created for your school.

You may want to guide students towards logging into some live stream classes to give them an opportunity to experience other methods. You may want to explore these first and consider which students/pupils might benefit from this.

Create an online dance quiz using ‘Kahoot’ for free

You could consider creating a dance quiz for your students – maybe testing technical terms or phrases. You can use pictures and videos here too so they can be quite fun. It is a free resource so students can also create their own too. You can learn more here.

Submit your pupils into our numerous online competitions

As many of our 'in person' events have been postponed or cancelled our Faculties have begun hosting online competitions! Open to all society members globally and their students, this is a great way to get back into the swing of training and preparing for performance. Learn more by visiting our event pages

Lockdown can also be a great time to develop your own professional skills.

Seek out free or paid webinars to join. Listen to pod casts. Research music. Research teaching and learning developments and ideas to support you in producing fresh movement material and strategies for the dance studio when you return. Plan your next show. Research new costume suppliers. Keep yourself as fit and healthy as you can. It is important both physically and mentally.

Reach out to other teachers

Don’t think you are alone. Reach out to your local exam organiser, Regional Representative or International Strategic Organiser. Connect with local teachers’ hubs, our Faculty Facebook groups or pick up the phone. Share your experiences and learn from one another.

Syllabus material should be used to support teachers training their students in the classroom – in person, or in a virtual space – such as Zoom.  

Sharing and/or reproducing Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing syllabus material including DVDs, CDs and books is not permitted. This includes filming content from the syllabus material for sale of either downloadable content or DVDs.

Music and teaching online

Members may use some syllabus music for teaching online (please see exceptions below), providing this is in a private class which participants can sign into by invitation only. Please note that our music cannot be used for public online classes.

For copyright reasons (copyright is held by creators not ISTD), you must not use the following syllabus music at all in online teaching. We will advise in writing if this position changes:

• Classical Greek (Grades 1-5)
• Tap (Pre-Primary)
• National Medal Test

You may find this link to royalty free music on YouTube helpful. Alternatively you can buy royalty free tracks and music online via websites such as Artlist, Epidemic Sound, Audio Jungle, etc.

FOR UK MEMBERS: PPL has provided some guidance on licences for dance teachers

The fee paid is based on the number of classes that an instructor gives in a year. Instructors need to keep a record of how many classes are cancelled and notify PPL at licence renewal. PPL will then give credit for these against next year’s fees.
