National Occupational Standards for Dance Leadership
Working under the auspices of the Dance Training and Accreditation Partnership (DTAP), the Foundation for Community Dance and Creative and Cultural Skills (CCSkills) have developed a draft suite of National Occupational Standards (NOS) for Dance Leadership.
NOS are defined by CCSkills as aiming to “provide a clear description of what you need to know and what you need to be able to do to perform a job successfully. They can help with recruitment, performance monitoring, and training planning”. They also form the basis of occupational qualifications.
The NOS in Dance Leadership apply to teachers and leaders of dance in all styles and settings whether they work full time within an institution like a school or a residential home or part time in a variety of places, and whether the ‘leader’ considers themselves to be a leader or rather an artist, facilitator or teacher.
During the course of November and December 2010, CCSkills made available the draft suite of NOS for Dance Leadership on their website www.ccskills.org.uk to allow for industry feedback, thereby ensuring that the NOS represent the wider dance sector. At the time of going to print the results of the consultation are not yet known but we will endeavour to update all ISTD members as information becomes available.
