Revised Level 3 and 4 accredited teaching qualifications launched!

As you may have read in the previous edition of DANCE (Issue 453, pages 32 – 33), as part of the review of our teaching qualifications, we launched revised versions of our Level 3 and Level 4 accredited teaching qualifications on 1st September 2010. The Level 3 Diploma in Dance Instruction (DDI) replaces the Foundation in Dance Instruction (FDI) and the Level 4 Diploma in Dance Education (DDE) replaces the Certificate in Dance Education (CDE). These form the two initial accredited teaching qualifications the ISTD offers in the European Union for Theatre Dance and Dancesport teachers and prospective teachers. 

The DDI and DDE are accredited by the Regulatory Bodies in England, Wales and Northern Ireland (Ofqual, DCELLS, CCEA) and are on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) and award 68 and 92 QCF credits accordingly. Outside the European Union for Theatre Dance teachers and throughout the world for Dancesport teachers, the current non-accredited routes remain in place. 

The feedback we have received so far on the DDI and DDE from learners and Approved Dance Centres has been extremely positive and is testament to the commitment and hard work of those involved in the review. Following on, the group involved in the development of our teaching qualifications is maintaining its momentum and is already working on the development of our higher level qualification portfolio.

1 Planning Techniques and Evaluation of Dance Teaching (equivalent to CDE Units 1 and 3)
2 Dance Teaching Practice (equivalent to CDE Unit 2)
3 Lifespan Development and Learning in Dance (equivalent to FDI Unit 3 with Topics 5 and 10 removed)
4 Dance Practice and the Relationship between Music and Dance in a Chosen Dance Genre (equivalent to CDE Units 6 and 7)
5 Contextual Study of Dance – to be completed only once

Course materials for the DDI and DDE – update

  • The full syllabi for the DDI and DDE qualifications and the supplementary genre sheets for DDI Unit 4 and DDE Unit 4 can be downloaded from our website.   • We are in the process of having the DDI and DDE syllabi translated into Greek, Italian and Spanish. As soon as they are available, they will be posted on our website, ready to be downloaded.
  • As far as the DDI and DDE portfolios are concerned, they can be purchased in their English, Greek and Italian versions from Keely Pedrick, Teaching Modules Assistant (tmassistant@istd.org).
  • Finally, with the course books associated with DDI Unit 2 Promotion of Health and Safety in Dance and DDE Unit 3 Lifespan Development and Learning in Dance, they are available to purchase from the ISTD Shop (sales@istd.org) in English, Greek and Italian: please note these are branded as FDI course books at the present time. 

Prior Accreditation and Achievement for the DDI and DDE 
With the FDI and CDE, the Education & Training Department dealt with all applications for prior (experiential) learning (AP(E)L), which entitled successful applicants to exemptions from specific units of the FDI and CDE. 

The process of taking into account prior accreditation and achievement has changed for the DDI and DDE in accordance with QCF regulations. The key difference is that Approved Dance Centres (ADCs) are now responsible for the first stage in the application process therefore, if you have any questions relating to this, please contact your ADC.
