ABOUT

We are delighted to announce that our annual Junior Ballet Awards will go ahead in a new digital format designed especially for 2020. We would like to celebrate the talent, resilience and adaptability of all our young dancers and their teachers, so we are inviting eligible candidates to put their best foot forward and take part.

Competition Details

Please read all the entry criteria, health and safety sections and our competition terms & conditions with care before entering. 

Entry ticket/s are available to purchase for your pupil/s via Eventbrite (see below). 1 entry ticket per pupil – maximum of 6 pupils per class, per teacher. Entry tickets are £10 and available for purchase until Monday 21 September 2020

Once you have purchased your ticket, you will be sent details of a Port de Bras and Petit Allegro for you to teach to your pupil/s in your PDF ticket confirmation. Details of the Set Grade Dance can be found below.

You will be required to upload video/s of your pupil/s performing these two set enchaînements and the Set Grade Dance to our secure Dropbox platform by the entry deadline Monday 5 October 2020 (details of where to upload your videos will be included on your order confirmation from Eventbrite).

Finalists will be notified by Monday 19 October 2020 and invited to dance in a live online celebration class from their own dance teacher’s studio on Sunday 25 October 2020, at which 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners will be announced. A Zoom link and event programme will be included in the notification.

The Grade 1/Class Exam 1 live online class will be taught by Sadie Morgan, the Grade 2/Class Exam 2 live online class will be taught by Fleur Jones.

No recording is allowed during the online celebration class under any circumstances. If you are found to be recording you will be removed from the room.

All prizes will be awarded at the discretion of the adjudicators.

All participants will receive a certificate of participation by email. Winners of 1st, 2nd and 3rd places will be awarded Medals by post.

Entry Criteria / Rules

The Online Junior Ballet Awards are open to Grade 1/Class Exam 1 and Grade 2/Class Exam 2 pupils of registered Society teachers worldwide.

Candidates must have passed Grade 1 or would have taken their Grade 1 exam by Friday 31 July 2020. 

As a nod to the exceptional times, rules of entry have been amended for this year only: eligible candidates will include those who would have taken the exam this year as well as those who have already passed it. Teachers are therefore encouraged to enter candidates they consider suitable who would enjoy and benefit from the experience.

No candidate is permitted to take a higher level ballet examination of any society until the Awards have taken place.

There are age limits for candidates entering any of the Award competitions. These age limits refer to the candidate age on 1st September 2020:

  • Grade 1 / Class Examination 1: 9 years and under
  • Grade 2 / Class Examination 2: 10 years and under

Teachers may only enter up to six candidates in each of the two categories (Maximum entry 12 per school). Once teachers have submitted their pupil’s video/s there will be two stages to the Awards:

  • Stage 1: Heats Adjudication. Finalists will be selected by esteemed faculty experts.
  • Stage 2: Finalists will be invited to dance in a live online Grade 1 or Grade 2 celebration class and winners will be announced 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

No late entries will be accepted, closing date is Monday 5 October 2020. Adjudication of Heats will take place thereafter.

Uniform Guidelines

Girls

No ribbon or other ornament is permitted in the hair for any award.

No jewellery or body ornaments are permitted for any award.

Make up is not permitted in the Junior Awards.

Grade 1

  • Aqua Leotard with attached skirt available from IDS (Catalogue Number ISTD 09) OR an appropriate alternative
  • Skin tone or pink ballet socks and skin tone or pink satin ballet shoes (without calamine or paint) with elastic.

Grade 2

  • Bluebell Leotard without skirt, available from IDS (Catalogue Number ISTD 10) OR an appropriate alternative
  • Skin tone or pink ballet tights and skin tone or pink satin ballet shoes (without calamine or paint) with elastic.

Boys

Grade 1

  • A boy’s white leotard with black or navy fitted shorts
  • White ballet socks and black or white ballet shoes with white elastic

Grade 2

  • A boy’s white leotard with black footless tights
  • White ballet socks and black or white ballet shoes with white elastic
  • Narrow leather belt for tights to be folded over if necessary

Please note that nothing must be added to the feet to enhance the shape and size of the instep.

Health & Safety

Safe dance practice / Floor craft are paramount.

Teachers should ensure their competitors are fully warmed up before recording the video/s and before the live online celebration class, so as to perform in a safe manner, which will not cause injury, ensuring the area chosen to dance is suitable and clear from any obstructions.

For safeguarding and security reasons it is preferable that teachers use a recording device with (preferably password protected) a memory card.

If teachers choose to use a mobile device, the footage should be uploaded immediately to the secure link through Dropbox provided by the Society, once the footage is transferred, this should be deleted from your device and not stored.

Video Guidance

Video Rules

  • Competitor name, competitor section must be written clearly on an A4 sheet and held by the competitor in clear sight at the start of the video.
  • Dance clothing worn as per Uniform Guidelines (see above).
  • Competitor body and feet must be clearly visible on the recording throughout.
  • Teacher to select suitable music from Grade 1 and Grade 2, or Class Exams, for Enchaînements. Correct accompanying music to be used for Set Grade Dances.
  • Enchaînements and Set Grade Dance to be performed once through ONLY.
  • Videos must be submitted by registered Society members/teachers ONLY.
  • Video submissions must be clearly named as Candidate name-Teacher name-Dance school
  • The Adjudicators’ decision is final, individual feedback will not be provided.

Guidance for Submitting Videos

  • Upon submission of the entry fee, a Dropbox link will be located at the bottom of the Eventbrite PDF ticket, where teachers can upload their competitors' videos securely.
  • It is of paramount importance that the video is of good visual quality and that the music can be heard. Videos of poor quality may affect the result of entries.
  • Entries must be submitted by the teacher. Videos must be submitted by registered Society members/teachers ONLY.

Terms & Conditions

Anyone competing in this online event does so at their own risk. The Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing will not accept any responsibility for any injury.

By entering your competitors’ videos, you have:

  • Agreed on your competitors’ behalf that media consent is given, if they are selected as a Finalist, for them to participate in the live online celebration class.
  • Agreed on your competitors’ behalf, if they are selected as a Finalist, for their name to be published on Society marketing / media channels.

Teachers are responsible for obtaining written consent from competitors’ parents/carers/guardians before submitting their video/s.

Principals & Teachers – Please ensure all teachers involved in preparing pupils for the competition, are fully aware of and understand the competition rules. The integrity of the teacher is relied upon to ensure that the rules are followed by all participants to enable the smooth running of the event.

On Sunday 25 October Finalists will dance in a live online celebration class from their own dance teacher’s studio, at which 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners will be announced. Time zones will be taken into consideration when scheduling this event as far as is possible. Upon submission of your application on your competitor’s behalf you are agreeing to the criteria set above and that you agree to adhere to health and safety regulations and the competitor rules.

If your pupil is a finalist and /or winner or runner up, entry video footage may be kept and used by the Society for any promotional purposes for up to two years, all other video entries will be deleted within 10 working days of winners and commendations being announced.
