Government guidance for opening private dance schools

The Department for Education issued detailed guidance which set out measures for school providers

On 1 July the Department for Education issued guidance for out of school activities which states that 'children will be able to attend settings such as … extracurricular clubs (ballet classes, gymnastics training, football coaching)’ after the end of the school term. Read more.

Guidance on measures for out of school providers who run community activities, holiday clubs, after-school clubs, tuition and other out-of-school provision for children, further clarifies that these can operate over the summer holiday, subject to the science and with safety measures in place. Read more.

It is important that you read and fully digest this guidance. But, in summary, it suggests that children’s dance classes can re-start from Thursday 23 July onward. To reduce the risk of transmission, children and young people who attend your setting should be kept in small, consistent groups, of no more than 15 children and at least one staff member. This is subject to the government’s current guidance including the social distancing of 1m+ only where 2m cannot be achieved and all other mitigation. Please bear in mind that the Government may impose additional mitigation measures when they address dance, gyms and leisure as a whole. As and when this guidance is released we will update you further.

In the meantime, a sensible first step would be to approach your venue(s) about re-starting classes and to ask for a copy of their COVID-19 risk assessment. Unfortunately the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government issued guidance on multi-use community spaces which states that ‘indoor community facilities should also not permit sports activities that would typically take place in a gym, sports venue, or a fitness or dancing studio – these venues have not yet been permitted to open.’ (Read more) So we are seeking further assurance that educational dance activities can, however, re-start.
