9th HKBDFI Cup Ballroom Dance Championships

Lawrence Chan, Society Fellow and Examiner, has held the first DanceSport Championships since Hong Kong 'shut down for business' in March 2020. Read more on how the event went on.

On 19 May 2021, Lawrence Chan, Society Fellow and Examiner, held a live event in Hong Kong to present certificates to those who gained them during online exam sessions in February and March of this year.

In Hong Kong, DanceSport Championships are held in Government Indoor Game Halls, Community Halls, Hotel Ballrooms. The 9th HKBDFI Cup Ballroom Dance Championships were held at Tsim Sha Tsui Welfare Association Hall, which Lawrence says is usually very difficult to book under normal circumstances.

Situated in Kowloon, the DanceSport Championships were the first since the pandemic close-down in Hong Kong in March 2020. 200 Solo dancers, 66 couples, 200 audience, 50 adjudicators and helpers were in attendance.

An Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing Certificates Presentation Ceremony took up part of the day, and two world renowned professional Latin dancers, Massimo Arcolin and Laura Zmajkovicova attended, achieving an incredible 99 points across their report sheets - the highest score Lawrence had seen in his career as a Society Examiner so far!

Lawrence says that life in Hong Kong is slowly reopening after the pandemic, with cases of Coronavirus mostly under control. Morale is somewhat low throughout the dance community, though things are finally moving in the right direction.

Massimo Arcolin (achieving a Licentiate Latin, Highly Commended with all 10 marks at 99) and Laura Zmajkovicova (achieving Highly Commended with all 10 marks also at 99).
