  5. Remembering Mario Mejia Cabrales

14-07-1938  -  12-05-2022

It is with deep regret that one of our true exponents and teachers of the ISTD work in Mexico, Mario Mejia Cabrales has passed away.

Mario Mejia was a teacher of teachers with a warm, honest and friendly manner. He always showed passion and discipline in his teaching and the pursuit of excellence.

Mario had a diverse and complete training in Mexican folk dance and danced professionally with the Ballet Folkloric de Mexico. Between 1970 and 1980 Mario started his career as a teacher having obtained his ISTD Associate Examination in National Dance. During those early years, we in Mexico were privileged to have visits from master teachers and examiners such as Robert Harrold, Patricia Crail, Elizabeth Harrison and Heather Rees. Elizabeth Harrison inspired and guided Mario, Joan Mondellini, Auda de los Cobos and Claudia Gomez Mejia to present the Associate Examination in Modern Theatre Dance and this was the beginning of the substantial development of Modern Theatre in Mexico. Mario was awarded a scholarship to the UK for English studies where he continued his studies in Modern Dance and Tap.

Upon his return to Mexico he presented his first Primary examinations in 1980 with Miss Crail and from this time onwards, he developed the ISTD examinations and was instrumental in the growth of Modern and Tap Faculties.

With Mario’s unique training he developed his boys' classes in the modern theatre dance styles making it compulsory for his folkloric students to attend his modern classes. To quote a faculty examiner;

‘It was always such a pleasure to examine Mario's boys, Mario's shoes will be difficult to fill.'

Mexico says the fondest farewell to a very kind, loving friend and mentor to many.
Tribute by Gail Clifford – ISTD Local Organiser, Mexico.
