The ISTD’s (unregulated) Student Teacher and Associate qualifications are recognised internationally throughout the dance teaching world and aim to give prospective dance teachers a solid grounding in the skills and knowledge needed to teach dance in a safe environment.

Not mandatory, however the Student Teacher qualification is a popular and helpful choice of preparation for prospective teachers, who wish to take the Associate examination or another teaching qualification.

Requirements

To take the Student Teacher examination, learners must be 16 years old or above.

ISTD Membership

Provisional Membership is available to those taking the Student Teacher qualification. On completion graduates may teach candidates, however only under guidance and if entered by a Full Dancesport Member (holder of Associate or above). Under the rules of the British Dance Council, Student Teachers are also not eligible to take part in amateur medallist competitions or amateur medal tests except when 'partnering'.

Associate

Requirements

To take the Associate examination, learners must be 17 years old or above.

Progression Routes

Following completion of the Associate qualification, graduates can apply to progress onto the ISTD’s selection of advanced dance teaching qualifications.

ISTD Membership

Graduates of the Associate qualification may become Full Members of the Society, which gives them voting rights on Society business and makes them eligible to enter candidates for ISTD examinations in both, Theatre Dance and Dancesport genres. Moreover, Associates may apply to the British Dance Council for a Licence to Adjudicate competitions in the genre in which you are qualified.
