Competition details

Entry ticket sales have now ended. 

The Imperial Classical Ballet faculty are pleased to present the 2021 Junior Awards online.

Society members from around the world can submit candidates currently studying Grade 1, 2 and 3. Once entries have closed adjudication will begin and be followed by a video showreel sharing the results.

Notes for teachers

It is important that teachers read all sections below, including competition terms and conditions, carefully.

Information on the Set Grade Dance options can be found below and once you have made your selection, please refer to the written notes in your ‘General Graded Examinations in Dance’ Technical Specifications.

Video submissions must be uploaded by Tuesday 26 October 2021.
(Details of where to upload your videos will be included on your order confirmation from Eventbrite).

Results will be announced on Wednesday 8 December 2021 via video showreel.
Teachers will receive an email with the link.

All participants will receive a certificate of participation by email. 

Winners of 1st, 2nd and 3rd places will be awarded medals by post.

All prizes will be awarded at the discretion of the adjudicators. The Adjudicators’ decision is final, individual feedback will not be provided.

Entry Criteria

The Junior Awards are open to Grade 1/Class Exam 1, Grade 2/Class Exam 2, and Grade 3/Class Exam 3 students of registered Society members and teachers worldwide.

Candidates must have been working at Grade 1, Grade 2, or Grade 3 by Saturday 31 July 2021. There are no age limits.

Teachers may enter up to six candidates in each of the three categories (Maximum entry of 18 per school).

All candidates must have been with their present ISTD qualified Imperial Classical Ballet teacher/school for at least nine months before the closing date.

Entries must be made by an ISTD teacher and not parents/guardians. Entries can be from any country. 

Video submissions are due by Tuesday 26 October 2021. No late entries will be accepted. 

Video Rules

  • Competitor name and section must be written clearly on an A4 sheet and held by the competitor in clear sight at the start of the video.
  • Dance clothing is worn as per Uniform Guidelines (see above).
  • Competitor body and feet must be clearly visible on the recording throughout.
  • Teachers are required to use specific pieces of music from Grades CDs (Grades 1 - 6) as advised by the choreographers of the Grade 1, 2, and 3 Enchaînements. Correct accompanying music to be used for Set Grade Dances.
  • Enchaînements and Set Grade Dance to be performed once through ONLY.
  • Videos must be submitted by registered Society members/teachers ONLY.
  • Video submissions must be clearly named as Candidate name-Teacher name-Dance school
  • The Adjudicators’ decision is final, individual feedback will not be provided.

Guidance for Submitting Videos

  • Upon submission of the entry fee, a Dropbox link will be located at the bottom of the Eventbrite PDF ticket, where teachers can upload their competitors' videos securely.
  • It is of paramount importance that the video is of good visual quality and that the music can be heard. Videos of poor quality may affect the result of entries.
  •  A plain light-coloured background is ideal, if possible.
  • All Videos should be submitted in MP4 format.
  • All Videos should be recorded in LANDSCAPE orientation.

Dress code 


Grade 1/Class Examination 1: Bluebell or Aqua leotard with an attached skirt (available from IDS Catalogue Number ISTD09). Skirts should be no longer than mid-thigh, so knees are clearly visible.

Grades 2/3 and Class Examinations 2/3: Bluebell or Aqua leotard without skirt (available from IDS catalogue number ISTD10) and matching elastic belt optional.


White leotard with black tights.


Grades 1/2 and Class Examinations 1/2: skin tone or pink ballet socks/tights.

Grade 3: skin tone or pink tights.


If wearing a white leotard and tights, then white socks are worn over tights.


The faculty recommends that all shoes are fitted by reputable dancewear retail outlets.

Skin tone or pink soft ballet shoes (satin, leather or canvas). Elastics on shoes may be worn for all Grades and Class Examinations. 

Ribbons may be worn from Grade 3 but are not compulsory.

If wearing a white leotard and tights, then white leather or canvas ballet shoes with white elastic.

Hair, Makeup, Jewellery

No ribbon or other ornament is permitted in the hair.

No jewellery or body ornaments are permitted.

Makeup is not permitted.

Set Grade Dances and Awards

Grade 1 / Class Exam 1: ‘Picking Blackberries’ OR ‘Collecting Conkers’.

Grade 2 / Class Exam 2: Ballet Solo OR ‘I Hate Homework’.

Grade 3 / Class Exam 3: Variation C (Waltz) OR ‘Hornpipe’.


Grade 1

  • 1st Place: Junior Ballet Awards Gold Medal
  • 2nd Place: Junior Ballet Awards  Silver Medal
  • 3rd Place: Junior Ballet Awards Bronze Medal

Grade 2

  • 1st Place: Junior Ballet Awards Gold Medal
  • 2nd Place: Junior Ballet Awards Silver Medal
  • 3rd Place: Junior Ballet Awards Bronze Medal

Grade 3

  • 1st Place: Junior Ballet Awards Gold Medal
  • 2nd Place: Junior Ballet Awards Silver Medal
  • 3rd Place: Junior Ballet Awards Bronze Medal

Terms and Conditions

Health and Safety

Safe dance practice/floor craft is paramount.

Teachers should ensure their competitors are fully warmed up before recording the video/s so as to perform in a safe manner, which will not cause injury, ensuring the area chosen to dance is suitable and clear from any obstructions.

Teachers should upload videos to secure Dropbox via the link provided. Once the footage is transferred, this should be deleted from your device and not stored.

Terms and Conditions

Anyone competing in this online event does so at their own risk. The Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing will not accept any responsibility for any injury howsoever caused.

A media consent form will be circulated to those who have purchased entry tickets. Written consent must be obtained for competitors and any additional performers from parents/carers/guardians before submitting the video/s.

By entering your competitors’ videos, you have:

  • Agreed on your competitors’ behalf, if they are selected as a winner or for any commendation, for their name and possibly footage of them dancing, to be published on the Society website and other media channels.

Upon submission of your application on the competitor’s behalf you are agreeing to the entry criteria set above and to adhere to health and safety regulations and the competitor rules.

Principals and Teachers – Please ensure all teachers involved in preparing pupils for the competition are fully aware of and understand the competition rules.

If your pupil is a finalist and /or winner or runner up, entry video footage may be kept and used by the Society for any promotional purposes for up to two years, all other video entries will be deleted within 10 working days of winners and commendations being announced.

No refunds are payable once an entry has been made and payment received.

The successful running of this competition relies on a certain number of entries being received. If insufficient entries are received, the competition may not be viable and in this case entry fees will be returned - Competitors must be made aware of this by their teacher in advance. If the competition cannot take place teachers will be advised by email.

The Adjudicators’ decision is final, individual feedback will not be provided.
