Course descriptions

Contemporary Dance: Intermediate

Building on the work at the Intermediate Foundation level, this course aims to provide teachers with the skills they need to prepare students for examination at the Intermediate level. Attendees will experience syllabus exercises and explore the key elements and themes of the syllabus. Teachers will also investigate and further develop methods and tools for setting and guiding students through structured improvisation tasks. As students are required to pass the Intermediate Foundation exam before progressing through higher exams, we advise that teachers undertake the Intermediate Foundation course before the Intermediate.

-----

Imperial Classical Ballet: Intermediate Option A and B set work

This refresher course will cover all the set work in the centre from Intermediate option A (formerly known as female work) and option B (formerly known as male work). The 2 pathways for examinations will be clearly explained.

Imperial Classical Ballet: The Training of Ballet Technique

Training Ballet Technique has been developed by the Imperial Classical Ballet Faculty and is a programme of exercises, to help establish the basic foundations of classical technique and placing for classical ballet. It is supported by notes and a DVD which can be purchased from the ISTD shop. There are 3 levels of exercises – introductory, level 1 and level 2 - simple floor, barre and centre practice exercises. Divided in to 5 chapters (Posture and Port De Bras/ Feet and Turnout, Adage, Pirouettes, Allegro and Batterie) the exercises slot nicely in to regular ballet classes to enhance student’s technique and strength.

On this full day, practical, in person course we will be covering a section of each level and chapter, with opportunities for discussion and practical application. This is a really helpful course for DDE Unit 4 tutors and students studying for teaching exams.

-----

Modern Theatre: New Grade 4 and Grade 5 Floor Sequences with development of Falls and Floor Limbering

On this course you will learn the New Grade 4 and Grade 5 floor sequences which will become an integral part of the EDI option choices. You will learn the Progressions that build up to each of the set sequences with attention given to the initiation and completion of each movement and how these movement pathways underpin safe weight transitions 'in and out' of the floor. We will examine how the concepts of the new movement vocabulary in the new sequences have already been established in existing floor exercises in the lower grades, how they prepare the physique to master the Grade 6 technique, referencing 'falling' in limbering and dance movement in order to develop a deeper understanding of the vocational work. We will discuss how this new work fits in to our existing syllabus, how these choices will impact your teaching and your pupils learning, ensuring a more inclusive approach for everyone to access a complete syllabus.

Modern Theatre: Revise and Regenerate - Intermediate Modern - Option A and B Press-ups and floor sequence only to free playlist with analysis of dance vocabulary, free work and ALL Amalgamations

On this practical course you will learn, analyse and discuss teaching points for the Intermediate original Press-Ups and Floor Sequence Option B with adaptations for Option A. We will also reference the specific Limbering exercises that have similar settings but with slightly adapted variations for Options A and B - Abdominal, Contraction and Back exercises. We will revise, with analysis and discussion, the content and settings of Amalgamations - Jazz A and B and Percussive.

On this course you will study the Dance Vocabulary with in-depth analysis and insight to teaching points of the Dance Movement technique embedded in the combination steps, amalgamations and free work. This deeper understanding is vital for anyone preparing students for Intermediate, DDE, Associate and Ass Diploma. Using free music from the new playlist will add insight into training the physique, the importance of dynamic energy, variations of style and emotional connection regardless of gender.

We hope by exploring a broader range of musical and artistic expression, every student can explore and develop their dance skills on the path to reaching their own potential. Demonstrators will be provided by the ISTD.

-----

Cecchetti Classical Ballet: DDE study - Focus on the Build ups/break downs and common faults (Grades 1 - 5)

In this course, attendees will work through the Build Ups and Break Downs (grades 1 to 5) of syllabus content as required for the DDE unit 4 examination. The afternoon will then be spent on analysis of correcting common faults found in the grade 1 - 5 syllabi, as required for the unit 4 examination.

Cecchetti Classical Ballet: DDE study - Teaching methods as required for the Intermediate syllabus and appropriate dance rhythms to enhance dynamics

This practical session will include the study of a selection of the Intermediate set list requirements, incorporating Teaching Methods for the DDE unit 4 examination. Delegates will also explore varying dance rhythms which enhance dynamic, within a class and examination.
