Cecchetti Classical Ballet

 
Grade syllabus refresher - Grade 1 - grade 4 (part 1) led by Alison Jenner
A syllabus refresher covering grades 1, 2, 3 and 4 (part 1), incorporating grade dance and unseen enchaînement guidance. 
 
Grade syllabus refresher - Grade 4 (part 2) - grade 6 led by Alison Jenner
A syllabus refresher covering grades 4 (part 2), 5 and 6, incorporating grade dance and unseen enchaînement guidance. 
 
Intermediate syllabus refresher led by Cara Drower
An in-depth look at the Intermediate syllabus. A large section of the syllabus will be studied (the specific list for DDE unit 4 as a minimum) plus any particular exercises requested by teachers. 
 
Advanced 1 syllabus refresher  led by Cara Drower
An in-depth look at the Advanced 1 syllabus. A large section of the syllabus will be studied, including option 1 and 2 candidates work and pointe work. Licentiate study can be offered if candidates are present on course.

Contemporary Dance

 
Intermediate foundation led by Laura Flanagan
This course aims to provide teachers with the skills they need to prepare students for examination. Attendees will experience syllabus exercises and explore the key elements and themes of the Intermediate Foundation level of the syllabus. Teachers will also investigate methods and tools for setting and guiding students through structured improvisation tasks. This syllabus aims to introduce students to the fundamentals of Contemporary dance technique and performance by approaching different movement themes at each level, specially created solos and the inclusion of structured improvisation to enable students to explore, develop and create their own movement vocabulary.
 
Intermediate led by Siân Hopkins
Building on the work at the Intermediate Foundation level, this course aims to provide teachers with the skills they need to prepare students for examination at the Intermediate level. Attendees will experience syllabus exercises and explore the key elements and themes of the syllabus. Teachers will also investigate and further develop methods and tools for setting and guiding students through structured improvisation tasks. As students are required to pass the Intermediate Foundation exam before progressing through higher exams, we advise that teachers undertake the Intermediate Foundation course before the Intermediate.
 
Intermediate refresher with progression to Advanced 1 led by Siân Hopkins
This course aims to provide teachers with a review of the Intermediate syllabus content and themes with a look at syllabus progression to Advanced 1. This course is for those who have previously attended a full Intermediate course. Delegates are encouraged to detail content they would like to review and highlight specific areas of exploration desired when completing their booking. The session can be tailored to these needs.

Imperial Classical Ballet

 
Focus on training students for success in examination at Intermediate level and above led by Sadie Morgan

This course aims to provide teachers with the skills they need to prepare students for the Intermediate examination and to consider how these skills can then be applied to higher levels.  Delegates will develop knowledge about the technical detail required at Intermediate level; consider the required artistry and musicality and ways these can be approached by the teacher; explore examples of breaking down steps and movements in order to teach them effectively; consider the Intermediate mark scheme; develop awareness of the training vocabulary as applied to Intermediate and higher levels. This course is suitable for teachers training students for Vocational exams, especially Intermediate; DDE & Associate students learning how to train Intermediate syllabus work;  DDE unit 4 tutors and teachers studying for Licentiate and Fellowship.

Focus on Advanced 1 option A and B set work led by Irela Strachan
This course will allow you to refresh your knowledge of the Advanced 1 Syllabus through a practical exploration of the Advanced 1 content, in relation to the Option A and Option B pathways. Delegates will gain an explanation of the option A and B Pathways as applied to Advanced 1; revise the Advanced 1 syllabus set work; and have the opportunity to ask the questions needed to solidify the detail within the set work. This course is aimed at teachers delivering Advanced 1 classes and teachers who are training for Licentiate or Fellowship. 
 
Focus on Advanced 2 option A set work led by James Butcher

This course will allow you to refresh your knowledge of the Advanced 2 Syllabus option A pathway only, through a practical exploration of the syllabus content. Participants will gain an explanation of the option A and B Pathways as applied to Advanced 2; revise the Advanced 2 Option A syllabus set work; consider the technical, artistic, and musical detail within the set work of the Advanced 2 syllabus; and will have the opportunity to ask the questions needed to solidify the detail within the set work. This course is suitable for teachers delivering Advanced 2 classes, teachers who are training for Licentiate or Fellowship and dancers who have a working knowledge of the option A syllabus. Please note option B set work and vocabulary will not be covered on this course.

Focus on Pirouettes and Allegro led by Vivienne Saxton
This course will be in two parts, Part 1: Training Pirouettes and Turns from grade 3 upwards. Part 2: How to develop detail and elevation in Allegro. Delegates will gain knowledge about the key elements required for successful Pirouettes and how to train students to achieve these throughout the grades.  Investigate how to train Allegro and develop Elevation and neat footwork. This course is suitable for Classical Ballet teachers, DDE students, Associate students, DDE unit 4 tutors and teachers studying for Licentiate and Fellowship.
 
Variations day led by Alison Avis
This course will cover one set variation from each grade, primary - grade 6, focusing particularly on the artistry and musicality at each level. Learn or refresh a set variation for each level with discussion about what is required in exams. Consider the story telling elements of variations in the lower grades and explore the artistry within variations for older students. This course is suitable for teachers training students for Grade examinations, DDE and Associate students and teachers training for Licentiate.

Modern Theatre

 
New grade 4 and grade 5 Floor sequences with progressions led by Ruth Armstrong
This course introduces the new Floor sequences in grade 4 and 5 using progressions that can be used in class to build up to the set arrangements. This course is essential for anyone teaching graded syllabus exams as well as tutors working on or delivering DDE, Associate or Associate Diploma. Delegates will have a revision of existing graded 4 and 5 Floor exercises found in the Limbering section with EDI updates for option A and B. Learn progressions in grade 4 and 5 that will prepare your candidates strength, articulation, and transitions through the floor. Learn choreographed settings of new Floor sequences in grade 4 and 5, and consider how the same building blocks have been established in earlier grades and evaluate the movement pathways fundamental to the development of Floor work and falls at the higher graded levels.
 
Refresher course for grades 4, 5 and 6 Musical Theatre progressions and alternative Musical Theatre amalgamations led by Emily Goodenough
This practical course revisits the Musical Theatre progressions and the alternative Musical Theatre amalgamations from the grades 4, 5 and 6 syllabi. This course is aimed at teachers who have already attended the individual courses previously for each grade.  It is designed for anyone teaching grades 4, 5 and 6 and all teachers considering the Musical Theatre style. Delegates will have a revision of progressions from grades 4, 5 and 6 with technical analysis. Revise the Musical Theatre alternative amalgamations from grades 4, 5 and 6. Explore creative use of the progressions in classwork as part of a Musical Theatre vocabulary, and consider musical and artistic development connecting to the narrative of the set amalgamations.
 
Revise and regenerate part 1 - Intermediate syllabus options A and B with new music playlist led by Ruth Armstrong
A practical revision of the Intermediate syllabus with analysis of the syllabus content for options A and B. As the entry exam for the ISTD teaching qualifications, this course is designed for anyone teaching Intermediate modern particularly DDE Tutors delivering unit 3 and unit 4. The analysis of this work is essential for anyone working on, or training candidates for Associate and Associate Diploma. This course references the roots established in previous syllabi that build up to the technical and artistic components outlined in the Intermediate and will consider how they are developed in the higher vocational syllabi making it ideal for those wishing to revise updates of the Intermediate when preparing for Licentiate and Fellowship. Delegates will consider the intent and purpose of the Intermediate syllabus options A and B excluding press-ups, Floor sequence, dance vocabulary analysis and amalgamations. Learn the revised settings of the current exercises that have irregular phrasing in the Intermediate syllabus, and discuss ways that free music and current music trends can enhance the original musical interpretation and artistic dynamics of the Intermediate syllabus.
 
Revise and regenerate part 2 - Conclusion of Intermediate syllabus options A and B with new music playlist led by Cathy Stevens
A practical revision of ALL 3 set amalgamations, Press-ups and Floor sequence from options A and B, using free music playlists and analysis of dance movement vocabulary contained in combination steps and free work. As the entry exam for the ISTD teaching qualifications, this course is designed for anyone teaching Intermediate modern particularly DDE Tutors delivering unit 3 and unit 4. The analysis of this work is essential for anyone working on, or training candidates for Associate and Associate Diploma. This course references the roots established in previous syllabi that build up to the technical and artistic components outlined in the Intermediate and will consider how they are developed in the higher vocational syllabi making it ideal for those wishing to revise updates of the Intermediate when preparing for Licentiate and Fellowship. Delegates will revise ALL amalgamations - Jazz A and Jazz B (previously known as boys amalgamation) and percussive amalgamation. Analyse technical and artistic component of dance movements vocabulary in combination steps. Explore creative ideas for the use of dance vocabulary in free work and discuss ways that free music and current music trends can enhance the original musical interpretation and artistic dynamics of the set amalgamations and free work in class.
 
Revision of grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 Arms and Isolation sequences led by Tereza Theodoulou
Revision of grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 Arms and Isolations sequences (including option A and B). This course is designed for anyone teaching Modern Theatre grades, regardless of how newly qualified or experienced a teacher you may be. By understanding the criteria essential for developing line and style, you will have the tools to explore how dynamic energy and movement pathways can inform your approach to teaching the vocational syllabi. This course is ideal for anyone delivering or studying for DDE unit 4, Associate and Associate Diploma as well as those preparing or teaching Licentiate or Fellowship. On this course delegates will revise grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 Arms sequences including option A and B with consideration of ‘initiation and completion’ of line. Revise grades 3, 4, 5  and 6 Isolations sequences with emphasis on variation of dynamic energy to enhance style. Consider how line and style can develop quality in dance movements. and discuss the importance of musicality and rhythmic dynamics and how this can enhance your pupils’ stylistic interpretation in performance.

Tap Dance

 
Intermediate refresher led by Andrea Ashton
This course will refresh your knowledge of the entire Intermediate syllabus. Attendees will receive corrections and teaching points on the exercises and sequences danced, have the opportunity to ask the questions needed to solidify the detail within the syllabi and dance and cement the entire syllabus with practical analysis of the included technical vocabulary. This course is designed for those with a thorough working knowledge of the entire syllabus. This is not suitable for those looking to learn from scratch. 
 
Bridging the gap – Developing the vocab from Intermediate
Course description will be updated shortly. 
 
Grade 6 refresher - With new Unaccompanied Sequence (danced to new playlist)
Revise the grade 6 syllabi to the new playlist, with the alternative Unaccompanied Sequence. Attendees will revise all elements of grade 6 syllabus including technical analysis and teaching strategies, learn and perform the alternative Unaccompanied Sequence and explore and discuss teaching tips to improve the technical exercises. This course is aimed at teachers who have already attended courses to learn grade 6 or who have a working knowledge of the syllabus - including DDE tutors and anyone studying Licentiate and Fellowship.
 
Musical Theatre and commercial free class

When booking, you will be asked to input your student pin number. If you do not know this, please ask your tutor or email Education@istd.org and a member of the qualifications team will be able to confirm this for you. 

In order to apply your discount, please ensure that you enter the discount code before selecting your tickets. Please enter the code in the Promo Code box at the top of the booking widget. If you have not entered your code, please restart your booking and apply the code, in order to receive the discount .

Times and dates

Please note that all course dates and times are stated in British Summer Time. Courses will include time for breaks; however, the exact timing of this break may vary from course to course.

Closing dates

Bookings for courses close 4 days before each is due to take place. Therefore tickets may not always be available to purchase via the website However, if you contact us via email coursebookings@istd.org we may be able to manually book you onto a course. 

Lecturers

In the instance of a change to availability, we may need to find an alternative lecturer (than the one originally scheduled) to lead a course. This will not affect the content covered in the course.

CPD hours

All hours stated next to each course refer to the earned CPD hours. This will be reflected on each certificate of attendance that you will receive.

Booking terms and conditions

 

Booking Conditions

All fees must be paid in full, with cleared funds, before bookings close for the course. Delegates may only attend once payment has been made. Payment will not be accepted on the day of the course unless under exceptional mitigating circumstances where this has been formally agreed by Education and Training.

Cancellations

Cancellations must be made via email to coursebookings@istd.org

  • For any cancellations made less than 21 days before the event, the ISTD will retain 50% of the total booking fee.
  • For any cancellations made less than 14 days before the event, the ISTD will retain 75% of the total booking fee.
  • For any cancellations made less than 7 days before the event, the ISTD will retain the total booking fee.
  • Under exceptional circumstances or where a doctor’s certificate is provided a full or partial refund may be given at the discretion of the Education and Training department.

In the event that event delivery is affected by a local lockdown or any other force majeure, we will do our best to make alternative arrangements in order to ensure the course can go ahead. However, if this is not possible, delegates will be contacted and offered a refund or a credit note.

Where the attendee tests positive for Covid-19, via a PCR or lateral flow test, and the period of compulsory self-isolation means they are unable to attend the event - a full credit note will be issued. Credit note is to be used within 24 months of the event date and refunds will not be issued.

Delegates are advised to book refundable travel and/or accommodation, as the ISTD will not refund any incurred costs if the event does not take place.

This does not affect your statutory rights.

Further information

Certificates of attendance will be sent to each delegate via email as a PDF document, after the CPD event has taken place. The CPD hours on the certificate will reflect the time attended by the participant with time deducted for late arrival or early departure from the session.

The Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing has the right to refuse bookings on the grounds of health and safety.

Course delegates are responsible for their own personal property and safety. 

The Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing reserves the right to record any CPD for the purpose of further training.

Filming /photography / recording of any content displayed or discussed during the class is not permitted by any delegate.

All work displayed is the intellectual property of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing and appointed lecturers.

Behaviour and conduct

Should any delegate display behaviour or conduct that is not deemed appropriate or respectful during or after the event then they may be asked to leave for the benefit of the other attendees.
