Contemporary Dance

 
Floorwork Focus led by Laura Flanagan
This course aims to provide further knowledge of the Contemporary floorwork material through exploration of the Intermediate Foundation and Intermediate Contemporary syllabus, considering progressions to Advanced 1. This course is for teachers who are familiar with both the Intermediate Foundation and Intermediate syllabi. There will be discussion and some practical work during this course.
 
Intermediate solo focus led by Laura Flanagan
This course aims to provide teachers with a review of the solo from the Intermediate syllabus. This course is for those who have attended a full Intermediate course.
 
Improvisation workshop with top tips and tools led by Davide Camorani
This course offers an improvisation class experience and aims to prepare you for teaching students the structured improvisation element of the Contemporary examinations. This session includes a practical improvisation workshop exploring concepts, uses and benefits to this area of dance. This is for teachers exploring improvisation work for the first time, and for those looking to further develop skills. Delegates are encouraged to contribute ideas and engage in discussion during the session.

Imperial Classical Ballet

 
Focus on grade 4 with variation led by Sinead Murphy
This course will cover all the set work in the centre at grade 4 and Variation C. Learn and/or refresh the grade 4 set work and Variation C, and consider the detail of the enchaÎnements. Questions will also be answered about unset work at this level. This course is designed for teachers training students at grade 4 level and DDE and Associate students.
 
Pointe work - Training vocabulary for Intermediate and Advanced 1 led by Donald Vleugels
This pointe course has been designed to facilitate the development of the Intermediate and Advanced 1 pointe vocabulary, including ideas on how to deconstruct the set vocabulary into a simplistic format, and to rebuild and develop training exercises. A PowerPoint presentation will outline the course content and a demonstrator will show the methods discussed. Delegates will gain enhanced awareness of methods that help to train the technique required to achieve the vocabulary at these levels; consider how to simplify the set vocabulary into a safe and effective training exercise; develop an understanding of the correct technical requirements of pointe work in relation to body alignment; discuss how to deconstruct the set vocabulary and develop training exercises that work towards the set pointe exercises in the syllabus. This course is aimed at teachers training students for pointe work at Intermediate or Advanced 1 level. DDE student’s, recently qualified teachers, and teachers who have not taught at this level for some time.
 
Focus on grade 5 led by Jackie Styles
 
This course will cover all the set work in the centre at grade 5 and includes examples of free work. Revise and refresh the grade 5 set work and consider the detail of the enchaÎnements. Delegates will also have discussion and practical learning of examples of unset enchaînements . This course is designed for teachers training students at grade 5 level and DDE and Associate students.
 
Focus on grade 6 led by Sinead Murphy
On this course you will refresh your knowledge of the Grade 6 set work, covering set enchainment in detail and some examples of unset enchainment will be taught. This course is designed for teachers training students at grade 6 level and DDE and Associate students.

Modern Theatre

 
Revise and regenerate part 1 - Intermediate syllabus options A and B with new music playlist - Part 1 led by Tereza Theodoulou and Ruth Armstrong
Revision of the Intermediate syllabus with analysis of the first half of the syllabus content for options A and B with new music playlist.  As the entry exam for the ISTD teaching qualifications, this course is designed for anyone teaching Intermediate modern particularly DDE Tutors delivering unit 3 and unit 4. The analysis of this work is essential for anyone working on, or training candidates for Associate and Associate Diploma. This course references the roots established in previous syllabi that build up to the technical components outlined in the Intermediate and will consider how they are developed in the higher vocational syllabi making it ideal for those wishing to revise the latest updates of the Intermediate when preparing for Licentiate and Fellowship.
 
Revise and regenerate part 1 - Intermediate syllabus options A and B with new music playlist - Part 2 led by Tereza Theodoulou and Ruth Armstrong

This course will outline how options A and B of the graded syllabus can be used in class and for the examination setting. Teachers will be provided with information that will clarify which exercises remain compulsory at present, and which are alternative. Only the Limbering section will be studied in this afternoons’ session. The new grade 4 and 5 optional Floor sequences will not be included in this session. This course is designed for anyone teaching the Modern Theatre grades wishing to explore available options for teaching different physiques. It is also ideal for anyone working on, or training candidates for DDE unit 4, Associate and Associate Diploma as well as those wishing to revise the latest updates of Limbering when preparing for Licentiate.
 
Modern Theatre revitalized for all – New and inclusive training for Modern Theatre graded syllabus including all the options A and B (Girls/Boys) syllabus - Part 2 led by Angeliki Andrinopoulou
This course will outline how options A and B of the graded syllabus can be used in class and for the examination setting. Teachers will be provided with information that will clarify which exercises remain compulsory at present, and which are alternative. Only the Centre Work and Set dance movement exercises will be studied in this afternoons’ session. The new grade 4 and 5 optional Floor sequences and set amalgamations will not be included in this session. This course is designed for anyone teaching the Modern Theatre grades wishing to explore available options for teaching all dancers. This course is ideal for anyone working on, or training candidates for DDE Unit 4, Associate and Associate Diploma as well as those wishing to revise the latest updates when preparing for Licentiate.

Tap Dance

 
Intermediate refresher - Part 1 and 2 led by Andrea Ashton
On this course you will refresh your knowledge of the Intermediate Drills and 5 technical sequences. Attendees will learn and recap the Drills and technical sequences of the syllabus, as well as discuss and explore the technical detail to enhance and improve delivery of the syllabus to your students. This course is designed for those with a working knowledge of the syllabus - including those teaching the syllabus and teachers coaching DDE, Licentiate and Fellowship. 
 
Intermediate refresher - Part 3 led by Hannah Willcocks
This course will provide a refresher on the Time Steps, Turning Drills, Turning Sequences and Interpretive section from the revised Intermediate syllabus. Attendees will learn the settings and technique included in part 3 of the syllabus, as well as explore and discuss the technical detail and teaching strategies to enhance and improve delivering this aspect of the Intermediate. This course is designed for those teaching the syllabus and teachers coaching DDE, Licentiate and Fellowship. 
 
Intermediate refresher - Part 4  led by Hannah Willcocks
The Commercial Sequence, Theatre Sequence and Bow from the revised Intermediate syllabus will be covered on this course. You will explore and learn the choreography in detail for the 2 amalgamations and Bow, as well as review and discuss the technical detail required to enhance and improve the teaching of these sequences. This course is designed for those teaching the syllabus and teachers coaching DDE, Licentiate and Fellowship. 
 
Rhythm and how to teach it - Primary to Intermediate led by Helen Green
This course will focus on the teaching of rhythm, rhythm games, improvisation and how to correct it within the grades to Intermediate. Delegates will revise and discuss the rhythm sections in the grades to Intermediate with strategies and feedback to support your students. You will consider and explore how to improve the teaching of improvisation, sharing good practice and explore teaching strategies for rhythm, learning rhythm and improvisation games to use in class. This course is designed for those teaching every grade to Intermediate, and teachers coaching DDE, Licentiate and Fellowship.

Times and dates

Please note that all course dates and times are stated in British Summer Time. Courses will include time for breaks; however, the exact timing of this break may vary from course to course.

Closing dates

Bookings for courses close 4 days before each is due to take place. Therefore tickets may not always be available to purchase via the website However, if you contact us via email coursebookings@istd.org we may be able to manually book you onto a course. 

Lecturers

In the instance of a change to availability, we may need to find an alternative lecturer (than the one originally scheduled) to lead a course. This will not affect the content covered in the course.

Attendance

All online courses must be attended live. We do not record our sessions for future viewing or purchasing, unless otherwise stated. 

CPD hours

All hours stated next to each course refer to the earned CPD hours. This will be reflected on each certificate of attendance that you will receive.

Booking terms and conditions

 

Booking conditions

All fees must be paid in full, with cleared funds, before bookings close for the course. Delegates will only be provided with zoom details and have access to online courses once payment has been made.

Each participant (irrespective of whether they are sharing a studio or device) is required to pay for their place on the course. Therefore, it is your responsibility to ensure that you do not pass on the zoom login details or allow anybody that has not booked, to join the course on any device.

Cancellations must be made via email to coursebookings@istd.org 

  • For any cancellations made less than 10 days before the event, the ISTD will retain 50% of the total booking fee.
  • For any cancellations made less than 7 days before the event, the ISTD will retain 75% of the total booking fee.
  • For any cancellations made less than 4 days before the event, the ISTD will retain the total booking fee.

Under exceptional circumstances or where a doctor’s certificate is provided a full or partial refund may be given at the discretion of the Education and Training department.

In the event that delivery is affected by a local lockdown or any other force majeure, we will do our best to make alternative arrangements in order to ensure the course can go ahead. However, if this is not possible, delegates will be contacted and offered a refund or a credit note.

We cannot account for the strength of delegate internet connection and ask that each attendee check the connection before each course. In the case of loss of connection part-way through a course, refunds will not be given. Where possible, we may offer you an alternative course to attend. This will be at the discretion of the Director of Education.

Certificates of attendance will be sent to each delegate via email as a PDF document after the CPD event has taken place. The CPD hours on the certificate will reflect the time attended by the participant with time deducted for late arrival or early departure from the session.

The Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing has the right to refuse bookings on the grounds of health and safety or if acceptance would contravene its Regulatory Authority Approval.

Course delegates are responsible for their own personal property and safety. Delegates must ensure that they follow the appropriate health and safety warnings, including:

  • Ensuring the space is environmentally equipped and safe (i.e. proper lighting and adequate temperature).
  • Having enough room to participate in the activity without there being any obvious risk of injury to the participant, to others, or risk of any damage to the surrounding property.
  • Ensuring that the flooring in the room is appropriate for the activity to be undertaken.
  • That no other adult is observing during the course without the prior knowledge and permission of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing.
  • The Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing reserves the right to record any online CPD for the purpose of further training.

Filming/photography/recording of any content displayed or discussed during the online class is not permitted by any delegate.

All work displayed is the intellectual property of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing and appointed lecturers. Recording the lectures would be a breach of copyright and anyone found doing so may be removed from the session and future bookings.
