Sarah Wells reports on an enlightening day of celebrations

Sunday 5th January 2014 saw the re-launch of the Cecchetti Centre with a 30th Birthday celebration in the Gillian Lynne Studio at Sadler’s Wells, London. Richard Glasstone OBE, the founder of the Cecchetti Centre, took an open class based on the Maestro’s ‘Days of the Week’. It was exciting to have so many students, teachers and spectators in attendance. We were very privileged to have one of our patrons, Dame Monica Mason DBE, in the audience, also Cara Drower (former director of the Centre), Mary Jane Duckworth (Chairman of the Cecchetti Trust), Elisabeth Swan (Faculty Chairman) and many more.

Richard’s class was enlightening, full of style and quality, interesting and demanding both for the teachers and students. After the class we watched (on DVD) the discussion between the Royal Ballet luminaries, Dame Monica Mason, Christopher Saunders, Jonathan Payne and Ursula Hageli that took place at the Legacy Salon Evening, which had been held to raise funding for the imminent DVD recording of the Advanced 2 Syllabus. We were then very lucky to be able to see highlights from the special performance that was the beginning of the Cecchetti Centre in January 1983, a beautiful tribute to Nora Roche. Thank you to all those who attended our special day, both dancers and spectators, it was a lovely celebration of what is our heritage, but primarily a fabulous system of dance that encourages artistry, footwork, line and style and is still a valid and worthy method of ballet for the dancers of today.
