Phrosso Pfister

25 January 2013

21st January 1922 – 22nd January 2013

Phrosso Pfister died peacefully on 22nd January at the age of 91. Her first link with the Society was in 1940 through taking examinations in Ballet, Modern Natural Movement and Ballroom. In 1945, following war service in the FANY Corps, working with the Special Operations Executive in Egypt and Italy, she became a student at the recently founded London College of Educational Dance Training, latterly known as London College of Dance. In 1949, Phrosso was appointed as a staff member and was to spend the next 36 years in the service of the college. In 1973, she was appointed Principal on the retirement of Anita Heyworth.

During her time as Principal, the college linked with Bedford College of Higher Education in order to offer a B.Ed. degree course in addition to the already well-established diploma course. In 1980, Phrosso was the recipient of the Imperial Award for Outstanding Services as Principal of the college. In 1985, she retired from the college and, for 25 years, gave lectures and classes in Dance History, Teaching Methodology and Natural Movement, which were an inspiration to many children, students and teachers.

Throughout her career, Phrosso sat on many committees. She was a long-standing member of Council until 1998 and was latterly a member of Grand Council.  She also served on the Natural Movement Branch Committee until 1979 and was Chair of the Dance Research Committee from 1990 to 2000.

Phrosso was a great supporter of the Society and, until the last few years, was always in attendance at many events. She will be sadly missed.

A requiem mass will be held at 12.30 pm on Tuesday 5th February at St Charles Borromeo Church, Ogle Street, London W1W 6HS, to be followed by a private burial.
