Matthew was born in Chelmsford and at the age of four his family moved to Southend on Sea where he started dancing in a small church hall. He started competing at a young age in local school medallist competitions and by the age of ten he was winning most of them. He was then approached by a judge who suggested he entered more challenging competitions and so he decided to try out the open competitions and started taking Ballroom lessons in Birmingham and Latin lessons in Hendon supported along the way by his incredibly supportive parents and family.

In 1994 he teamed up with Nicole Westdyk, winning numerous titles culminating in winning the World, European and International Amateur Latin Championships in 1999 before turning Professional in 2000. In 1999 Matthew and Nicole were also the principal couple in the sell out Stage Show “Burn the Floor". Matthew continued to win many major titles as a professional until 2005 when he joined the Strictly Come Dancing line up. He won Series 5 in 2007 partnering Alesha Dixon and beating off Matt Di Angela and Flavia Cacace to take the Strictly Come Dancing title.

Matthew has twice received the Carl Alan Award for “Outstanding Contributions to Dance”.

Currently actively teaching, coaching, lecturing, demonstrating and adjudicating throughout the UK and the world, Matthew is keen to pass on his knowledge to all ages and abilities of anyone who enjoys dancing.
