Sue Passmore Award and Broadening Access to Dance Award

Our mission is to educate the public in the art of dancing in all its forms and strive to advance excellence in dance teaching and education. We are committed to providing opportunities to dance for all and, to this end, we are pleased to launch two new funding opportunities for Society Members to support projects that broaden access opportunities in their local community and further support our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion initiative.

Are you a Society member?

Are you passionate about providing opportunities for people to engage in dance?

Are you committed to broadening access to dance?

Do you have a new project idea, or have you already started a project that you would like to develop which supports the principle of broadening access to dance?

If you can answer ‘yes’ to all of these questions, you could receive up to £2,000 by applying for these funding initiatives.

The Sue Passmore Award, of up to £2000 per award honours the significant contribution of our former Chair and Trustee of over 20 years and will be awarded to two recently qualified dance teachers (within five years of achieving their first Society teaching qualification). The Broadening Access to Dance Award of up to £2000 per award will be awarded to two teachers who have held their Society teaching qualification for more than five years.

Both awards are designed to fund creative and innovative approaches to broadening access to dance and applicants will be encouraged to identify CPD or a mentor contribution to support the successful delivery of their project. Upon completion, recipients will share the outcome of their project with members.

Two awards will be made annually in each category and applications are welcome from the UK and International members.

Applications will take the form of a project proposal and will open annually in the autumn; application opening dates will vary each year.

To apply

Applications are now open, please complete your application here. We advise that applicants complete the form using Google Chrome.

Applications will close 12pm GMT Thursday 18 November 2021

More information

Our guidance notes provide detailed information about the eligibility criteria, application form, and process; we recommend that those wishing to apply read through these carefully before completing the application form. Please download the guidance notes here.

Ideas can be completely new or an extension or development of a current project, however, funding cannot be used to reimburse activity that has taken place before the application outcome is received by the applicant.

Suitable ideas may include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing dance classes or workshops for local schools, nurseries, care homes, SEN schools, community groups, etc.
  • A collaborative project with other schools or groups that broadens access to dance.
  • Providing opportunities to dance for people that otherwise wouldn’t be able to access a dance class.
  • Taking dance to new audiences or into unusual spaces and settings.
  • Collaborating with other art forms to create a cross-artform performance.

To be eligible to apply for the awards, applicants must:

  • Hold membership that is paid up to date.
  • Hold a Society teaching qualification.
  • Submit their completed application by the deadline.

Further criteria regarding the application can be found in the guidance notes.

Applications are welcome from Society members only and must include a clear project proposal and accompanying budget, outlining how the project will support the principle of broadening access to dance and what the funds will be used for.

Successful applicants will be required to evidence spend, complete an evaluation and share the outcome of their project with society members.
