Level 6 Diploma in Dance Pedagogy (DDP)
If you've successfully completed the Level 4 DDE and are looking to progress your dance teaching career, the Level 6 DDP is the essential next step as a qualified teacher.
DDP Level 6 Qualification
The Level 6 Diploma in Dance Pedagogy (DDP) Qualification Accreditation Number 603/0996/9.
The qualification is regulated at Level 6 on the Regulated Qualifications Framework and has a credit value of 120.
The qualification provides experienced dance teachers and professional dancers with a programme that builds on your previous training, knowledge and experience. It will take your teaching to the next level and enhance your current dance skills. The DDP is regulated at Level 6 which is equivalent to the final year of an undergraduate degree.
The Diploma in Dance Pedagogy is delivered through lecture-based seminars and practical dance intensives with mentor support from experienced practitioners between taught sessions.
Core units include:
Unit 1 - Planning and evaluating programmes of learning
Unit 2 - The practice of teaching dance
Unit 3 - Reflective practice
These units are studied simultaneously and allow you opportunities to develop and refine your teaching practice and explore teaching and learning theories in relation to your chosen genre. Optional units offer you the freedom to devise a tailor made study programme which caters for your personalised teaching interests.
UNIT 4 options: (choose one to make up the DDP with units 1,2,3,5):
Unit 4A: Teaching Classical Ballet
Unit 4B: Teaching Dance for Musical Theatre
Unit 4C: Teaching Dance in Education and Community Settings – (a placement for a project to be undertaken would need to be provided by the student teacher and Unit 4C is most useful if you wish to teach in schools and community settings)
UNIT 5 options: (choose one to make up the DDP with units 1,2,3,4):
Unit 5A: Applied Dance Science
Unit 5B: Social, Emotional and Cognitive Development
Unit 5C: Choreography
Unit 5D: Action Research Project
The prerequisites for entry onto the Level 6 DDP is successful completion of the Level 4 DDE or equivalent teaching qualification and / or extensive performing and teaching experience. On achieving the DDP you are awarded Full Teaching Membership of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing.
The DDP is not ISTD syllabus-based but provides a route into applying for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills status (QTLS) to be qualified to teach in Further Education colleges. For more information regarding the process of applying for QTLS through formation https://set.et-foundation.co.uk/
The DDP a flexible programme delivered by Approved partner centres and the society.
There are options to:
- Enrol to complete the full course (2 years part time)
- Enrol for individual units to suit your existing commitments and work at your own pace. The full qualification must be completed within 5 years of initial enrolment.

As part of our charitable status, the Society Council has reserved funds to provide bursaries to support dance teachers to further their training. Applicants for the Diploma in Dance Pedagogy, who are members, may apply for a bursary of up to £2000 to support their study for this qualification.
Progressing your journey
The qualification covers the requirements of the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET) and enables graduates to apply for Qualified Teacher status (QTLS) through the Society for Education and Training (SET). UK DDP Graduates can progress to careers in the state funded education sector on qualified teacher pay scales.
You may also use this DDP qualification, alongside other suitable qualifications and experiences, to apply to become a Level 4 DDE Approved Tutor with the Society, for example or study a Master’s Degree or similar. The course also compliments other higher-level teaching programmes such as the syllabus focused Licentiate and Fellowship qualifications.
Accreditation of Prior Learning
If you do not fulfil the entry requirements for ISTD Level 6 Diploma in Dance Pedagogy but feel you have the required knowledge or experience, you can apply for APEL to access this qualification.
