FAQs
Who is the Street Dance Associate for?
The Street Dance Associate is designed to support teachers to become Street Dance teachers. It is currently the ISTD`s only Street Dance teaching qualification and it enables successful candidates to become Full Teaching Members of the ISTD and enter pupils for examinations in Dancesport genres.
The Street Dance Associate is an initial teaching qualification, suitable for anyone aged 18 years and above who wishes to teach Street Dance.
Why has the Street Dance Associate examination changed?
In 2024 we refreshed and updated the Street Dance Medal tests and so the Street Associate needs to now align with this.
What are the main changes?
The examination is now rooted in three main sections, which were previously 4 sections.
The new sections are titled:
1. Demonstration and analysis
2. Teaching approaches and unprepared sequences
3. History and Anatomy
The knowledge that needs to be demonstrated is largely the same as previously, but we have clarified the examination format, exam requirements and marking criteria, and these can be found in the new Street Dance Associate Specification.
When does the new format start being examined?
The new format will be used for all Street Dance Associate exams from 1st October 2025. The new format will fully replace the old one and so the last entry date for exams using the old format is 30th September 2025.
Who can enter candidates for the Street Dance Associate?
Any Dancesport or Theatre Full Teaching Member can enter candidates for Street Dance Associate. It is recommended that anyone preparing candidates for the exam has taken the Street Dance Associate themselves, but this is not compulsory.
How do I become a tutor for the Street Dance Associate?
Tutor training is not compulsory for teachers wishing to enter candidates for the Street Dance Associate however, any Full Teaching Member who would like to learn about how to tutor the new Street Dance Associate can join our free online training session on Sunday 13 July 2025 (10am – 1pm UK time).
