Introduction and overview

The ISTD Ballroom, Latin and Sequence (BLS) Area Qualifiers are regional competitions designed to support Medallist dancers as they progress through the ISTD Medal Test system. Open to dancers of all ages and experience levels, these events offer a welcoming environment for newcomers while providing a clear pathway for those aiming for the prestigious National Finals.

With categories ranging from Set Dance Solos and Teacher–Student partnered events to non‑qualifying Couples competitions, the BLS series blends structure, creativity, and the thrill of performance, all within the framework of the ISTD syllabus.

What makes this series unique?

Set Dance Solos

Every competitor performs the same set choreography, creating a fair and controlled comparison. Dancers choose one of two routine options for the entire season:

Option A: A syllabus‑based routine

Option B: A more challenging, higher-level routine

Once selected, the option must remain consistent for the whole year.

Teacher–Student Events

Organised by age and medal grade, these categories require dancers to have passed the appropriate ISTD exam before entering.

Newcomer Events

Beginners can take part in dedicated Newcomer categories, with up to three entries permitted before progressing into graded events.

Competitors must adhere to syllabus restrictions for their grade, encouraging structured development

Background and legacy

The BLS competition series was launched after the pandemic as a way to rebuild grassroots participation and support dancers taking their ISTD Medal Tests. Since its introduction, several key milestones have strengthened its identity:

ISTD Bursary Awards

Recognising outstanding Juvenile and Junior dancers who achieve the highest combined scores across Ballroom, Latin and Sequence.

The President’s Cup

A unique format where dancers learn a bespoke piece from a leading Latin professional during a dedicated workshop — and then compete using the choreography.

Evolution to Area Qualifiers

In 2026, the series shifts to a regional model, culminating in an exciting Grand Finals in February 2027, marking a new chapter for ISTD Medallist competitions.
