  5. Why Dance magazine is going digital: A conversation with our Chief Executive

14 November 2025

Dance magazine is becoming more accessible and dynamic. From January 2026, we’ll be moving online to bring you richer, more interactive content. We asked Ginny to share why this matters and what’s next for our community.

Why is ISTD moving Dance magazine to a digital format now?

The way we consume content has changed significantly in recent years. Our members want instant access and flexibility. Members also tell us that video is their preferred type of content. Dance is a visual artform, and our new platform allows us to bring movement to life through videos, galleries and interactive features in ways print can’t. Moving to a digital format allows us to deliver all of that, anytime, anywhere, for all ISTD members to access. It’s about providing what’s most useful to those in the dance community today and being ready for the future.

What inspired this decision - was it member feedback, industry trends, or something else?

It was a combination. We’ve seen strong trends across publishing and education toward digital formats, and members have told us they value convenience and interactivity. This transition reflects those insights and aligns with our commitment to innovation.

How does this change fit into ISTD’s broader vision for the future?

Our vision is to make dance education as accessible, inclusive, and inspiring as possible. Digital tools help us do that - whether through online learning or a magazine members can access at any time, from anywhere in the world.

''Dance is a visual artform, and our new platform allows us to bring movement to life.''

What advantages will members experience with the new digital magazine?

You’ll have instant access on any device - phone, tablet, or computer. The new format is interactive, allowing browsing Dance magazine to become a much more immersive experience.

Will the content or editorial approach change in any way?

The heart of Dance remains the same - stories, insights, and inspiration from across our community. I’m excited that this new chapter in the magazine’s evolution is being supported by an editorial board formed from faculty committee members who will help ensure that content remains fresh and relevant to dance teachers. In addition, the new digital format will facilitate more dynamic layouts, multimedia features, and opportunities for members to engage.

How easy will it be for members to access the digital magazine?

Very easy. You’ll receive a direct link via email, and the magazine will be hosted on Shorthand, a platform designed for smooth, intuitive reading. The link to read the magazine will also be available in the My ISTD section of the website, so members can login anytime and access it.

What new features can members look forward to?

The digital magazine will include dance footage, photo galleries and clickable links to related content. It’s a richer, more connected way to experience Dance.

How do you see Dance magazine evolving over the next few years?

We’ll keep listening to members and exploring new ways to make the magazine even more interactive and community-driven. The digital format gives us flexibility to innovate.

What excites you most about this transition?

The possibilities. We can now showcase dance in motion, celebrate our members’ creativity, and make the magazine more accessible than ever. It’s a new chapter, and I’m thrilled to share it with our community.
