  5. Why the Cecchetti Malta Awards matter

30 September 2025

A day of excellence

On Sunday, 1st December 2024, the Johane Casabene Dance Conservatoire Studios welcomed 117 young dancers to the 6th edition of the Cecchetti Malta Awards. The atmosphere was charged with anticipation as students arrived well-prepared, beautifully groomed, and ready to make their teachers proud.

Adjudicating the event was Brenda Lee Grech, Maltese classical dancer and former professional with Scottish Ballet and Rambert Dance Company. Classes were led by Nina Winter and Elizabeth Garner Watson, with live accompaniment by pianist Veronique Vella, a team that ensured every participant was challenged, inspired, and celebrated.

“At its heart, the Cecchetti Malta Awards are designed to encourage high standards of the Cecchetti Method in Malta while fostering a healthy, supportive environment where students can experience the joy of performance. Eviva Cecchetti!”  Theresa Lungaro-Mifsud

More than a competition

The Awards have quickly become a highlight of the Maltese dance calendar, eagerly anticipated by students and schools across the island.

Rowena Grech, Principal of the Academy of Dance Arts, reflected on their impact:

“Our students feel lucky that they are given a chance to do this locally. I love the way they support one another even though they are competing. Encouraging them early builds not only technique, but also resilience and self-belief. The Awards do more than celebrate classical training – they cultivate confidence, courage, and community.”

This sense of togetherness was felt throughout the 2024 edition:

“It was especially moving to witness Cecchetti students from all over Malta come together, united by a shared passion for dance. The energy, camaraderie, and mutual respect among participants were truly heart-warming.” Johane Casabene

Pathways to professional success

For some, the Cecchetti Awards are not only a milestone but a stepping stone towards a career in dance.

Brigitte Gauci Borda proudly shared the achievements of two former students:

Andrea Riolo – Junior Award winner in 2019, now dances with BRB2.
Claudia Santamaria Soriano – Junior Award winner in 2021 and Senior runner-up in 2023, now with the Nacho Duato Company.
These stories highlight how the Awards can inspire dancers to dream big, work with purpose, and believe in their potential.

“The Malta Awards are more than just a competition – they’re a celebration of dance, dedication, and artistic growth on the Island.” Marisha Bonnici

A teacher’s perspective

For Marisha Bonnici and Seed Dance Studios, the Awards are a powerful motivator and a unifying force within the school. Preparation begins months in advance, blending technical refinement with artistic expression. Students are encouraged to connect deeply with their choreography, exploring meaning, musicality, and performance intention. Beyond medals and marks, Bonnici highlights the deeper impact of participation:

“They gain a sense of pride and accomplishment, learning how to manage nerves, take feedback constructively, and support one another. They learn that dance is not just about winning – it’s about evolving, expressing, and connecting. Performance is not just rehearsed but really experienced. When you enjoy it – your audience does too!” Marisha Bonnici

The impact extends to the whole school community, fostering a culture of excellence, reflection, and shared pride.

Looking Ahead to 2025

With each edition, the Cecchetti Malta Awards continue to grow – in scale, inclusivity, and reputation. By welcoming dancers of all ages, the Awards give even the youngest students the chance to experience the discipline, focus, and joy of performance.

The organising team and schools across Malta are already looking forward to the 2025 Cecchetti Malta Awards, which promise to be another unforgettable celebration of artistry and community.

For students considering participation, the message is clear:
this is more than just a competition. It is an opportunity to test yourself, be inspired, and grow alongside peers who share your love of dance.
