Imperial Classical Ballet - Vocabulary steps from Primary to Intermediate - Day 1
Lecturer: Carole Ann Watson

The course will focus on allegro, terre à terre, petit allegro, petite batterie and ballonnés, exploring the vocabulary and associated training exercises from Primary through to Intermediate level. Through physical learning, the steps will be broken down and progressively built up, enabling attendees to explore the development of technique, musicality and performance qualities across the different levels. Key teaching points and training exercises will be highlighted throughout, providing practical guidance on how to support students as they progress through the syllabus.

The morning will begin with teachers observing two student masterclasses at Grades 5–6 and Intermediate level. This will provide an opportunity to see vocabulary explored during Day 1 being taught and developed with students, alongside lyrical work and grand allegro, and to observe how technique, musicality and performance qualities are applied at different levels.

In the afternoon, teachers will continue their physical exploration of the vocabulary, focusing on lyrical work and grand allegro from Primary through to Intermediate level. The work will be broken down and progressively developed, with attention given to technique, musicality, performance and key teaching points, helping attendees to understand the progression of the vocabulary and how best to support students as they develop through the syllabus.

Carole Ann Watson

Born in London and raised in Kent, Carole began her dance training with Gay Holdforth before continuing her professional studies at Doreen Bird College. She went on to enjoy a successful career as a professional dancer, performing both in the UK and internationally.

Since 1984, Carole has been teaching in Italy and has made a significant contribution to dance education and teacher training. In 1995, she became an international examiner for the ISTD Imperial Classical Ballet Faculty, followed by the Modern Theatre and Tap Faculties in 2000. She is also a tutor for teaching qualifications from DDE through to Fellowship level.

Committed to lifelong learning, Carole continued her academic studies and achieved a Diploma in Dance Pedagogy (Level 6 EQF) in 2019. In February 2023, she completed an MA in Applied Dance Technique Pedagogy at Middlesex University, London.

Carole served as the official organiser for Italy from 1994 to 1999 and, since 2019, has held the role of International Representative for Europe for the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD).

In recognition of her outstanding contribution to dance education, she received the ISTD International Award for her work in Italy in 2000 and the Jean Campbell Award in 2009. Carole is currently the Artistic Director of Arte e Movimento in Cesena, Italy.

Times and dates

Please note that all course dates and times are stated in local time. Courses will include time for breaks; however, the exact timing of this break may vary from course to course.

Course cancellations

Courses are subject to cancellation (up to 3 weeks in advance) if the minimum attendee numbers have not been reached. If a course does not meet minimum numbers, anybody who has booked will be refunded in full. If you have used credit to book this course, you will receive the value back in credit. 

Therefore we strongly advise that all attendees book well in advance to avoid disappointment. 

Closing dates

If a course meets the minimum numbers (3 weeks in advance), final bookings will close 3 days before it is due to take place and tickets will no longer be visible via the website. However, if you contact us via email coursebookings@istd.org we may be able to manually book you onto the course. 

For any delegates who attend on the day without prior payment, we reserve the right to apply a 10% surcharge onto the cost of the course. 

Course Prices

Additional discounts are available for student teachers with provisional membership status. Please contact coursebookings@istd.org with your membership number for a discount code.

Lecturers

In the instance of a change to availability, we may need to find an alternative lecturer (than the one originally scheduled) to lead a course. This will not affect the content covered in the course.

CPD hours

All hours stated next to each course refer to the earned CPD hours. This will be reflected on each certificate of attendance that you will receive.

Booking Conditions

All fees must be paid in full, with cleared funds, before bookings close for the course. Delegates may only attend once payment has been made. Payment will not be accepted on the day of the course unless under exceptional mitigating circumstances where this has been formally agreed by Education and Training.

Cancellations

Cancellations must be made via email to coursebookings@istd.org

• For any cancellations made less than 21 days before the event, the ISTD will retain 50% of the total booking fee.
• For any cancellations made less than 14 days before the event, the ISTD will retain 75% of the total booking fee.
• For any cancellations made less than 7 days before the event, the ISTD will retain the total booking fee.

Under exceptional circumstances or where a doctor’s certificate is provided a full or partial refund may be given at the discretion of the Education and Training department.

In the event that event delivery is affected by a local lockdown or any other force majeure, we will do our best to make alternative arrangements in order to ensure the course can go ahead. However, if this is not possible, delegates will be contacted and offered a refund or a credit note.

Delegates are advised to book refundable travel and/or accommodation, as the ISTD will not refund any incurred costs if the event does not take place.

This does not affect your statutory rights.

Further Information

Certificates of attendance will be sent to each delegate via email as a PDF document, after the CPD event has taken place. The CPD hours on the certificate will reflect the time attended by the participant with time deducted for late arrival or early departure from the session.

The Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing has the right to refuse bookings on the grounds of health and safety.

Course delegates are responsible for their own personal property and safety. 

The Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing reserves the right to record any CPD for the purpose of further training. The ISTD is committed to the principle that the interests and welfare of participants taking part in dance activities is paramount. To comply with the Data Protection Act 1998, ISTD needs your permission before we take any photography or video of you. By acknowledging and agreeing to these terms I consent to ISTD photographing or videoing me at this event. 

Filming /photography / recording of any content displayed or discussed during the class is not permitted by any delegate.

All work displayed is the intellectual property of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing and appointed lecturers.

Behaviour and Conduct

Should any delegate display behaviour or conduct that is not deemed appropriate or respectful during or after the event then they may be asked to leave for the benefit of the other attendees.
