Entry requirements

Intermediate Foundation and Intermediate

There are no prior examination requirements to enter these levels. However, candidates must have a solid understanding of the ISTD Grade-level vocabulary to ensure they are prepared for the technical and artistic demands of the syllabus.

Advanced 1

Candidates must have passed Intermediate to be eligible for Advanced 1.

Advanced 2

Candidates must have passed Advanced 1 to be eligible for Advanced 2.

Exemption policy

Students who already hold an equivalent certificate in the same genre from another Ofqual-approved dance awarding body may be eligible for exemption from the Intermediate or Advanced 1 examinations.

How to apply for exemption

  • Applications must be made in writing to the Examinations department (ukdanceteachers@istd.org).
  • Requests should be submitted to the Examinations department at least 6 weeks prior to the examination session
  • Supporting documentation i.e a scanned copy of the certificate confirming the equivalent qualification must be included.

This exemption pathway ensures that students with prior recognised training can bypass the entry requirement qualification to continue their progression without unnecessary repetition, making the ISTD framework both flexible and inclusive.
