  5. Step up to success with Harvey Littlefield

2 June 2026

Can you tell us a little about your dance training journey, when ISTD training featured and how it shaped you and your work as a performer?

I studied the ISTD syllabus in the early years of my training at the Dance School of Scotland, specifically in Modern, which was so physical and fun. It gave me such a nuanced understanding of the body and helped shape a natural performative quality. This aided me not only Modern Theatre, but in ballet too. I felt it really allowed me to be authentic and show up in the studio as just Harvey, not just “Harvey the dancer.”

What did taking ISTD exams mean to you, and how did it build your confidence?

For me, the exams were super fun and offered a great balance of challenge and reward. Receiving results was always exciting; I really wanted to work hard and understand the values and specificities that ISTD so beautifully interlinks within its syllabus. The exams were also an initial performance experience for me. I built confidence through performing amalgamations and exercises that not only contained technical challenges but also pushed us to take risks as dancers and performers.

What does dance mean to you?

Dance is a massive part of me. It’s been in my life forever. It’s how I express myself, but it’s also a form of escapism for me, and hopefully for others too. It’s incredibly healing. Dance allows me to embrace the innate power we all hold within ourselves; it encourages you to dive into your truth and step into the most expansive version of yourself. I love performing.

What advice would you say to young dancers in training?

I always find myself encouraging younger dancers to be themselves. Don’t worry about others or how they move. Of course, be inspired, but focus on your own authenticity. That will take you far. Embrace versatility, because no matter what path you take, you’re bound to encounter different styles, genres, choreographers and bodies of work. I also think it really benefits your career to have an open mind. Dance comes with many challenges, so stay open. My last piece of advice is don’t be afraid to use your voice, This is such an important quality not only in our industry, but in life.

Who inspires you?

Initially, I would say my mum inspired me. She’s such a versatile performer, starting as a dancer, then becoming an actress, and now a writer. She’s also a lead examiner for Trinity. I admire that she doesn’t put all her eggs in one basket and, as a woman, doesn’t allow societal or preconceived notions to stop her from pursuing what she feels passionate about. She’s an icon.

What does stepping up to success mean to you?

Stepping up to success, to me, means bringing all of myself forward, not leaving any part behind because of binaries or limiting rules. It means embracing both the good and the bad, understanding that you can learn from everything. Life isn’t linear, so don’t be afraid to fail. Enjoy life, be yourself, and success will follow. It also doesn’t look the same for everyone, so take the time to discover what success looks and feels like to you.
