Course overview
The Diploma in Teaching Community Dance (DTCD) qualification supports aspiring dance teachers, across all genres, with the essential skills and knowledge for a career in dance education, particularly within community settings.
Aligned with the ISTD's vision for inclusive education, it covers safe teaching practices, child development, and practical techniques, fostering knowledgeable and professional dance teachers. Graduates can apply their skills in real-world contexts and enhance employability with versatile, transferable skills valuable in both educational and creative settings.
Achieving the DTCD not only provides a regulated qualification but also offers pathways for further advancement, such as the ISTD’s Diploma in Dance Education (DDE) or the Level 6 Diploma in Dance Pedagogy (DDP), paving the way for potential QTLS training.
Course details
There are 3 Units to complete to achieve the full DTCD qualification:
- Unit 1: Preparing for Safe Teaching
Duration: September 2024 – January 2025 - Unit 2: Applied Teaching Practice
Duration: October 2024 – February 2025 - Unit 5: Child Development
Duration: February 2025 – May 2025
At the ISTD Academy, you can access individual units of study delivered intensively online. This includes interactive online modules combined with engaging live lectures and tutorials. The assessment framework ensures that student teachers develop the practical skills and knowledge essential for entering the teaching profession and building a sustainable career.
Entry requirements
- Dance knowledge and experience, e.g. dance training for a number of years, performing, teaching.
- Age 18+
- Some experience of being within a teaching environment or a desire to follow a teaching pathway.
- GSCE English (or equivalent) at Level 4/C or above (or equivalent).
- Students for whom English is a second language are expected to hold an IELTS at Level 6.
- Learners need to hold an enhanced DBS check if they are based in England, a PVG check if they are based in Scotland and have satisfied any local criminal records checks in international settings.
