Join us for two days of CPD to expand your knowledge and understanding of the modern theatre grades, amalgamations and vocational examinations. It is an opportunity to come together as a community of teachers to share good practice, observe and take part in practical work and rejuvenate your modern theatre work. Bring your pupils to the masterclasses and observe them in practice working with a member of the teaching team. Consider new strategies and developments to inspire your teaching.

Course details
Saturday 27 June 10:00-17:00 (6 CPD hours)
Modern Theatre: Graded amalgamations (not taught within teaching qualifications) and Grade 4 and 5 Floor work
Lecturer: Angeliki Andrinopoulou
Part 1 – Graded Set Amalgamations
Created especially for Greek ISTD teachers, this inspiring CPD course revisits the Grade 2 Lyrical and Grade 5 Jazz set amalgamations while examining the aims and musical expectations of Grade 6 Lyrical.
Aligned with the Modern Theatre Faculty’s Concept of Progressions, the course offers practical, progressive teaching strategies that develop technique, musicality and artistry through structured free work and unset sequences.
This essential course offers a unique opportunity for anyone delivering the modern grades including newly qualified teachers as well as DDE Tutors - to strengthen their pedagogical confidence and ensure pupils are fully prepared, technically, stylistically, and artistically. It marks an important new chapter for Greek teachers, providing the guidance and support needed to navigate these developments with clarity and assurance.
Part 2 – New Grade 4 and 5 Body Strengthening Exercises (previously referred to as ‘Body Strengthening Sequences) with development of Falls and Floor Limbering
On this course you will learn the progressions that build up to the choreographic settings of the new Grade 4 Body Strengthening Exercises with attention given to the initiation and completion of each movement and how these ‘movement pathways’ underpin safe weight transitions in and out of the floor. Explore how to create preparatory exercises for each of the progressions and consider how to incorporate them in your regular classes.
Examine how the concepts of the movement vocabulary in the new sequences have already been established in existing floor work in the lower grades, revise elements of our Grade 4 and 5 option B work, and consider how they prepare the physique for Grade 6 technique, referencing ‘falling’ in limbering and dance movement to develop a deeper understanding of the vocational work. We will discuss how this new work fits into our existing syllabus, how these choices will impact your teaching and your pupils’ learning, ensuring a more inclusive approach for everyone to access a complete syllabus.
Learning Objectives
- Learn the Grade 2 lyrical and Grade 5 jazz amalgamations demonstrating dynamic quality and progression of movement.
- Learn Grade 4 and 5 floor sequences demonstrating understanding the progression of movement, weight and transitions.
- Revise elements of option B work within Grade 4 and 5.
- Analyse and discuss key concepts that will enhance your teaching and ensure an inclusive approach.
Sunday 28 June 10:00-17:00 (6 CPD hours)
Modern Theatre: Student Masterclass Day with Teachers Observation
Lecturer: Angeliki Andrinopoulou
10:00-11:30 (1.5 hours) - Masterclass 1 - Ages 10-12, working at Grades 2-4
12:40-13:10 (1.5 hours) - Masterclass 2 - Ages 12-14, working at Grades 4-6
14:15-16:15 (2 hours) - Masterclass 3 - Ages 14+, working Intermediate & Advanced 1
This CPD masterclass offers teachers the opportunity to observe pupils including their own being taught by a senior member of the ISTD teaching faculty.
Through guided observation, pupils will explore how technical foundations, particularly postural alignment and the sensitive transfer of weight, are shaped and refined into expressive, articulate dance movement. The session explores how principles established in the syllabus work are designed to develop dance technique as a performance art form, emphasising how clarity of placement and weight transference combine with musical response and artistic intention to create confident, expressive performers.
Teachers are encouraged to reflect deeply on their own practice and leave with practical strategies to nurture both technical integrity and expressive fluency within both syllabus and free work.
Learning Outcomes
- Recognise how alignment and weight transference underpin expressive, coordinated movement.
- Observe methods that cultivate musicality, projection and performance presence.
- Apply reflective insights to enrich the artistic and technical development of their pupils.
