  5. Our commitment to improving racial equity in dance

10 January 2022

The events of 2020 and increased public awareness of racial inequities naturally prompted many arts and educational organisations to reconsider their approach to equality and diversity.

World-leading dance education organisations bbodance, IDTA, ISTD, RAD are working collaboratively to address the issue of racial equality in our sector. We recognise that our organisations are not always representative of the communities in which we operate. By working together and sharing expertise, resources and ideas we will make a change.

The Racial Equality Group is a group formed by these world-leading dance organisations. In 2021, we came together for our Talking Dance: Improving Racial Equity symposium to discuss how to improve racial equity in dance education and training. Since this event, we have been meeting on a termly basis, continuing working together to affect change.

The Talking Dance: Improving Racial Equity online symposium

Our Talking Dance: Improving Racial Equity online symposium brought together leading organisations to discuss the roadblocks to achieving diversity in dance education and training and how these can be dismantled at every level of dance teaching, creating a vision for a future of inclusive and diverse dance.
