  5. Using dance to reimagine the gender binary

16 November 2021

Shown at the Headgate Theatre in Colchester at the end of October, and the first performance of its kind, iNk’d is a contemporary dance show which explores the identity of a romantic relationship between a cisgender man and a transgender woman, featuring dancer Jessica Allen, Transgender Diversity and Inclusion Consultant and member of our LGBQTIA+ and Gender Think Tank.

Winning the Fringe Review 2019 Teapot Award for 'Exciting New Work', the 40-minute work by The CTC Dance Company is designed to inform and educate an audience to the importance of transitioning, as well as promote understanding of the reasoning behind transitioning. The performance illustrates the obstacles a transgender couple may be put up against in society, with a nod to the celebrations of transcendental love.

A mixture of Contemporary New Style, Physical Theatre and Spoken Word, the performance sparks important conversations about gender identity, with a brilliantly diverse cast. Jessica Allen stars in the show alongside Tarik Frimpong and is the first classical dancer in history to cross the gender binary working in a classical-contemporary style. Setting a benchmark for the future of trans performers, keep a lookout for future iNk’d performances and the work of dancer Jessica Allen. Such work is vital to ensuring and promoting the fact that dance should be inclusive for all.
