At ISTD, we believe that the future of dance teaching depends on how well we support trainee teachers from the very beginning. That's why we're launching the ISTD Trainee Teacher Package - a new initiative designed to support aspiring dance teachers throughout their training journey.
From September 2026, all students starting the Diploma in Dance Education (DDE) at an ISTD Approved Dance Centre will automatically join the Trainee Teacher Package as part of their training.
A supported start to a teaching career
Becoming a dance teacher can be incredibly rewarding - but starting out can feel daunting. The Trainee Teacher Package has been created to provide clear, structured support alongside formal training, helping trainees build confidence and feel prepared for the profession.
For a one-off fee of £99, trainee teachers receive up to five years of access to professional guidance and resources while completing their DDE. This includes:
- Professional recognition as an ISTD Trainee Teacher from day one
- Guidance on professional standards, safeguarding and inclusive practice
- Access to a supportive trainee community, webinars and networking opportunities
- Early-career insight to help build confidence in teaching
- Discounts on Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
- Exclusive partner discounts on insurance, business support and dancewear
- Regular updates and digital access to Dance magazine
Together, this support helps trainees feel connected, informed and confident as they progress towards qualification.
Developed with teachers, for teachers
The Trainee Teacher Package has been developed in collaboration with Approved Dance Centres, tutors and early-career teachers, ensuring it reflects the real needs of those entering the profession.
By working closely with centres and newly qualified teachers, ISTD has created a programme that complements DDE training while providing additional support beyond the syllabus - particularly in areas such as professional practice, career development and confidence-building.
Opening doors to teaching
With members in more than 60 countries, ISTD qualifications are recognised worldwide. The Trainee Teacher Package makes teaching a more accessible and attractive option for dancers exploring their next steps - whether they plan to teach alongside a performance career, transition into education, or pursue teaching full-time.
